Description

From #1 New York Times bestselling author J.R. Ward comes an unforgettable story of passion and vengeance in the Black Dagger Brotherhood world.

When Ahmare’s brother is abducted, there is nothing she won’t do to get him back safely. She is unprepared, however, for the lengths she will have to go to save his life. Paired with a dangerous but enticing prisoner, she embarks on an odyssey into another world.

Duran, betrayed by his father, imprisoned in a dungeon for decades, has survived only because of his thirst for vengeance. He has been biding his time to escape and is shocked to find an unlikely and temporary freedom in the form of a determined young female.

Battling against deadly forces and facing unforeseen peril, the pair are in a race to save Ahmare’s brother. As time runs out, and the unthinkable looms, even true love may not be enough to carry them through.

I really enjoyed the story, but it pulled me entirely out of the story line of the main series. I really wish these stand alone novellas had been put in a series or sub series of their own so the momentum of the main series could continue unhindered. This literally has no tie to the rest of the series other than it’s behind and ends in Caldwell, NY.
  • Couldn’t make it past Chapter 10

This book is probably not bad but the fact that it is stuffed in the middle of a great series of books without any explanation is upsetting. Maybe have a different series or even have it just be a stand alone but it made absolutely no sense in the Black Dagger Brotherhood series. I will not finish this book and I seriously doubt that I would be missing anything. The character development is so weak that even by chapter 10 I had no clue what that the heck was going on and honestly didn’t care to find out. It may have not helped anyways because what little was shared about the characters, I immediately didn’t like. I would not suggest this book to anyone.

This didn’t really resonate and I found it a slog to get through. No relationship to the BDB and total non sequitur dead end story of the cult and the random castle with mute guards. So much was jammed into the story that the characters were basically two dimensional. Not worth the interruption between the actual BDB stories.

I read a review that said there was no character depth or chemistry between the protagonists. That there was a lot of repeating of history. I’m thinking the reviewer most have been in a bad mood or something and I couldn’t disagree with that review more. I loved the characters, the relationships and the story. It fit’s wonderfully well into the BDB series and world.

I have not been as deeply invested in a Black Dagger Brotherhood couple since Lover Eternal. Don't get me wrong. You are definitely reading a review from a certified fangirl. But normally from book to book , I feel invested in one character more so than the other in getting their HEA. And connecting with one solidly is not a bad thing, because JR Ward writes an entertaining adventure each and every time for this reader. Wrath and Beth. Rhage and Mary. They have been forever my equal-on-a-pedestal-in-love-with-both. In a game of choice one to live, I'd tell you to off me because I can't choose who I find fascinating more. Until Ahmare and Duran. Ahmare is driven by the need to save her brother. Using the 'weapon' known as Duran, she's going to make it happen at all costs. Duran finds helping her leads him on a path to final realize the revenge h dreams of. What they didn't expect was a connection to each other. Once again, JR Ward spins a deeply woven tale that has you rooting not only for them to get the desired outcome of the quest they are on but to find a connection. I found I was captivated by the strength of character in which each individually and as a couple endured through the process. They are tested in ways that can and should break them apart. Being a part of their journey is what kept me engrossed for the entire read. As a fan and avid reader, I hope we get to spend more time with the characters introduced here in future books within the BDB and BDB Legacy worlds. Now here comes the surprising part of my review... There are 16 books to read and to some readers that is a daunting task. Do you start with book one and see if this is for you? Okay I vote yes. But... you know maybe you need a sample. If you don't mind only subtle references to the entire BDB world, I would actually recommend you maybe start here. This story is a singular look at characters without needing to know backstory on how they get here or those characters involved. JR Ward gives you a complete story within their piece of the BDB world that will have you scrambling to read more.
  • Disappointing-should be in the fee section

For the price of this book I expected more, the basic plot was good but lacked any depth. There wasn't much to the characters but some background repeated a few time, or much to the chemistry between them. they went from point A, to B, to C with no real twists or turns. This is a book I would expect to find in the free section, unlike the free section spelling and grammar was pretty good, you didn't have to piece together sentences are insert words to figure things out but aside from that everything was so basic you could find it in the free section

    J. R. Wards black dagger brotherhood and her novels based in the black dagger world are captivating. She has such a way with her word to draw you in and keep you until you finish the book. My favorite author of all time by far. If you haven't checked out her black dagger brotherhood series it is a must read. 🗡
