Description

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly war raging between vampires and their slayers. And there exists a secret band of brothers like no other—six vampire warriors, defenders of their race. And now, a dutiful twin must choose between two lives...

Fiercely loyal to the Black Dagger Brotherhood, Phury has sacrificed himself for the good of the race, becoming the male responsible for keeping the Brotherhood's bloodlines alive. As Primale of the Chosen, he is to father the sons and daughters who will ensure that the traditions of the race survive and that there are warriors to fight those who want all vampires extinguished.

As his first mate, the Chosen Cormia wants to win not only his body but his heart for herself- she sees the emotionally scarred male behind all his noble responsibility. But while the war with the Lessening Society grows more grim, and tragedy looms over the Brotherhood's mansion, Phury must decide between duty and love.

Against other bad reviews I feel like the series is developing. The first few books in the series were interesting enough but I felt like this book really started to open up the story and intrigue the reader.

Wow. The book weaves 3-4 story lines into the drama. Several climatic events. A real page turner.

Love these stories and I’m so involved with the whole series. Only held back a star because I hated the wizard voice. I understand the need for it, just felt the character spoke too much and often skipped over much of it. Otherwise, I love the how the series is evolving with each story.
  • A good set-up

Phury & Cormina’s story is not the most riveting but it’s an important one to tell. The big thing about this book is the other story lines it sets up…John Matthew and Xhex, Quinn & Blay, Lash. And of course the introduction of Lassiter who is one of my favorite characters of the whole series.
  • Darkest Book So Far

This is possibly the hardest book to read of the 6 I’ve already read. I vividly remember the tinge of sadness amongst the happy ending, thinking of Phury not really being in the Brotherhood anymore. I’m glad I have 19 more books to read, so hopefully that entire story arch ends up a little happier too. This was a rather philosophical book, which I rather liked.
  • Wonderfully put together

This book touches deep down on so many heavy topics of this world and graces them beautifully. Phury reminds me heavily of my brother who struggled, but finally cleaned up and did amazingly. It brings tears to my eyes to witness it in this book and feel so proud and happy things are slowly working out in both the brotherhood, and Phury’s life.

Almost didn’t buy this book because of the reviews and I’m so glad I did anyway. Yes, there’s a lot more going on, and it makes the plot that much better. Seeing Phury’s battle with his addiction was built in truth. His actions were that of an addict, they were not meant to be met with a positive reaction. The mindset of an addict is not always logical. Everything was intentional, down the crossing timeline and the first time the slept together. I loved this book and am excited to see the series continue. ***I will also say this book had some potentially triggering content related to killing and John’s rape.***

Omg what happen J.R.? Were you rushed w a deadline? I mean the whole “wizard” showing up out of nowhere and his drug addiction. More annoyed than anything. I felt zero compassion for Fhury. The timeline was all over the place. For that I blame the editors. This was a pretty big miss for me.

There was only one spot that wasn’t spaced properly for me. The grammar is because the author is writing from the perspective of the characters. Mr. D is a Texan lesser with bad English and grammar. So naturally, the writing will reflect that. It isn’t because it’s poorly edited like so many reviews state. It’s because it’s written that way. The book wasn’t bad otherwise, but I got irritated with Phury. I wanted to shake him so he’d sort out his issues. The situation was a slow burn... really slow. But otherwise it was good.

The last one with V was borderline and I had hope that Ward would turn it around for Phury and get back to the caliber of story she did for the first 4 books but no dice. This book was awful. I skimmed about half of it. No romance, no chemistry and Phury was barely even involved. He popped up every 3 chapters or so and most of his scenes weren't even involving Cormia! Too many storylines and too much focus on the new vampires. Phury deserved better.
