Description

True love brings a deadly threat to the Black Dagger Brotherhood in this sizzling new novel in J.R. Ward’s #1 New York Times bestselling series.

Possessed by the demon Devina, Balthazar is once again on the hunt for the Book of Spells—and fighting an undeniable attraction to a woman. As a thief, he has stolen a lot of things…but he never thought his heart would be taken by another. Especially not by a human.

As a homicide detective, Erika Saunders knows there is something otherworldly going on in Caldwell, New York. Mutilated bodies that cannot be explained are all over her case list—and then there are her nightmares in which she’s hunted by shadows and captivated by a mysterious man who is both a suspect and a savior.

When Devina’s wish for true love is finally granted, Balthazar and Erika unwittingly become the gateway for the rebirth of an old enemy of the Brothers. Will the very thing that brings them together lead to the ultimate destruction of the Brotherhood? Or will they have to lose everything in order to save the race’s most sacred defenders?

I bought the first book on a whim and have enjoyed them all since. It will be interesting to see where this goes next. I don’t want to ruin things by spilling the beans but, with a former villain back in the game it’ll be something to wait for. Especially if he and Devina team up for a show down with the B&B’s. But, did Rahvyn fix things? Time will tell. I’m a sucker for happy endings but I can see the loose ends that could be tied up in later books. Needless to say, my heart breaks again for Lassiter. Sometimes it bugs me how he’s treated when no one really knows just how much he works behind the scenes. I’m worried for him this time, he has nothing left to sacrifice. Poor angel. I don’t envy him, that’s for sure. I read his book is coming in 2023. Looking forward to reading his story. I really hope he gets his happy ever after too.
  • Okay but not a page turner

Have always loved this world but the last few books haven’t been big page turners for me. I’m always rooting for the BDBs, BoBs and their loved ones but I find myself much less invested in a lot of these secondary character stories. The whole Rahvyn plot line was odd and confusing to me…maybe it will become clearer in subsequent books. But I’m also finding that the lack of a clear, central conflict makes the books much less engaging. I’m not sure what the fight is truly against anymore and what the long term goal is for the species. As an aside, I’m sick of Devina…I find her really uninteresting and simply a boring brat. I hope she gets her comeuppance and Lash becomes the main evil protagonist moving forward. I’ve been waiting for soooo long to get more on Lassiter and his whole backstory. Hoping that will come in another book soon.

The Brothers are back and this time Balthazar and Detective Erika Saunders are front and center. “True virtue doesn’t come with an asterisk.” “And thieves can have morals—hey, is this our first fight?” He erased her memories but she still sees him in her dreams. He’s a thief and she’s a cop. “No, I’m telling you that I stole from a rich a$$h@!!who cheated on his wife and treated her like a piece of art he could acquire and then hang up and forget about. The demon Devina will not leave him alone. He doesn’t want to involve Erika so he keeps pushing her away. The next bullet in the chamber had Balz’s name on it, not Harry McHappyHusbandandFather over there with his recycling and his sciatica and his two weeks of vacation a year. As with all recent Ward books there are multiple plots and boy am I excited that Lassiter is finally getting his own HEA in the next book. We get hints in this one. V makes a appearance as a secondary character. There is also a shocking surprise that is going to change things in future books.
