Charles Godfrey Leland (1824-1903) was an American writer working in the genres humour and satire and collecting folklore. He studied American and European traditions and travelled a lot while working as a journalist. Leland became famous for his comic book 'Hans Breitman's Ballads'.
This is an old Indian legend that was collected and retold by Charles Leland. The story tells us about a couple living by the lake. The couple has no children. One day the wife comes to the lack and see a handsome young man coming out of it. The woman gets to know that this is the Serpent and she falls in love with him and they become lovers.
