There just isn’t much to say about the third book other than it had me turning page after page to see how this all ends. Everything pays off: the writing, descriptions, and details are so well done and engaging. 10/10 what a journey this has been.

The perfect end to a near perfect trilogy. A story full of twists and turns that left me both elated and horror struck as the prospect of Darrow’s demise was a possibility. But, in the words of Sevro, you can’t kill the bloodydamn Reaper of Mars, I omitted a part of the saying for good reason. The action sequences left me on the edge of my seat, and at points were gut wrenching. Darrow’s mission to free the low colors that were subjected to slavery was paced extremely well and offered an interesting insight to how low colors were treated, especially the obsidians and Sefi’s story arc. As for the antagonist, I really hated the Jackal, which means he was really well written. I was very satisfied with how he met his end as it was very poetic due to it alluding to Eo’s death. Not to mention, the redemption arc of Cassius effectively tied up all loose ends in regards to character disputes, another satisfying conclusion. However, the war is not over, as the death of the Sovereign left a hole in an already fractured society, a society where someone else must take the helm. I am happy Pierce Brown left the conclusion a little open ended so that he could expand on the universe by writing more books, which I am eager to read. Easily my favorite series, highly recommend.

Loved this series. Thoroughly engaging characters and action. The life lessons throughout echo the feeling of reading Tolkien and Lewis.

So I’ll start by saying I thought outside the very beginning the first quarter of the book was a bit of a slog but it really picks up and halfway through I didn’t want to put the book down. By the end this books tension was outstanding and I blew through this pretty quickly. I’ll admit the writing style isn’t always my favorite but when we get to those tense moments the writing quirks disappear and you’re engulfed in the action.

This trilogy started with about five chapters of gorgeous sci-fi writing. Unfortunately, it immediately took a terrible turn and was leaned on the worst parts of sci-fi for a couple thousand more pages. Having said that, if you’re interested in what is basically a novelization of a pretty heroic comic book, then this book is definitely for you. If you’re a fan of sci-fi as a vehicle for literature, then keep browsing. I hate to chew up another persons art, but this seems to be written by AI with prompts that included “good guys never loose, also make it seem like a one season Netflix show”.
