Allan Pinkerton of the famous Pinkerton National Detective Agency records the espionage activities that took place during the Civil War and how his spy ring evolved into the Secret Service. Pinkerton served as Spymaster in Washington, D.C. under Lincoln, during which time he uncovered a plot to assassinate Lincoln in February of 1861. He not only ran a large ring of spy operatives, but also investigated and arrested several Confederate spies working in Washington, including Rose O'Neal Greenhow.
