Description

From the acclaimed author of The Troop—a book that is “utterly terrifying” (Clive Barker). “Fans of unflinching bleakness and all-out horror will love this novel….Each new shock is freshly disturbing” (Publishers Weekly, starred review).

A strange plague called the ‘Gets is decimating humanity on a global scale. It causes people to forget—small things at first, like where they left their keys, then the not-so-small things, like how to drive or the letters of the alphabet. Their bodies forget how to function involuntarily. There is no cure.

But far below the surface of the Pacific Ocean, a universal healer hailed as “ambrosia” has been discovered. In order to study this phenomenon, a special research lab has been built eight miles under the sea’s surface. But when the station goes incommunicado, a brave few descend through the lightless fathoms in hopes of unraveling the mysteries lurking at those crushing depths…and perhaps to encounter an evil blacker than anything one could possibly imagine.

No likable characters, setting is predictable and annoying. Just a slog to read.

This was a disappointment. It has elements of body horror, claustrophobia, and past trauma that, in the hands of a more skilled writer with an actual story to tell, could have been phenomenal. As it is, this ends up being a deep dive (haha, get it?) into a gratuitous mish mash of “things that are real, real freaky” as well as some utterly pointless animal cruelty, added simply for the sake of eliciting an emotional reaction. A lazy and cheap trick. There’s not much story here. The entire plot is just incoherent and illogical. After four hundred pages you’re left with an ending that tries to excuse itself as Lovecraftian, but is actually a nonsensical insult to the reader’s intelligence, and probably deeply upsets Cthulhu on a personal level. I enjoyed The Troop. At least that had a story that made sense within the realm of horror as well as characters that were decently fleshed out. As for this, I’d like 400 some odd pages of my life back Nick, with apologies to humanity, labradors, Guinea pigs, mice, and Cthulhu.

I liked Troop and Little Heaven more. The plot is somewhat diffuse in that Luke is flashing back on pain and living in a horror with no real connections. The end was rushed, blah and frankly confusing. Im not really sure what the story was about. I love Cutter’s style though and will push on through his other works.

One of the best books I have read in a long while. It gripped me and pulled me right down. It was beautifully written. More detail than I have ever thought possible. And horrifying. I will lay awake tonight, unable and unwilling to sleep. I fear that something from the deep came back up with me and is here right now. If I close my eyes…. Will I wake up and still be who I am?

Loved it! I haven’t read a book this unsettling since I read “It”. I had to stop reading it at night. I recommend reading this if you’re into scary unknowns.

If you see bad reviews, ignore them. This is a fabulous book. Scary, edge of your seat, great character development, flowed well, I’ve not read a book like this before.

This book is amazing. The body horror is on point, the story amazing, and the claustrophobia you feel even reading the book is so intense. 10/10, i eagerly await nick cutters next installment.
