Description

One of The Atlantic’s Great American Novels of the Past 100 Years • A modern masterpiece about love and kinship, about living in an America birthed from slavery. Nobel Prize laureate Toni Morrison gives life to characters who struggle with what society tells them to be, and the love they long for and crave as Black women. • With a new introduction by Jesmyn Ward.

“Extravagantly beautiful. . . . Enormously, achingly alive.” —The New York Times

Sula and Nel are born in the Bottom—a small town at the top of a hill. Sula is wild, and daring; she does what she wants, while Nel is well-mannered, a mamma’s girl with a questioning heart. Growing up they forge a bond stronger than anything, stronger even than the dark secret they have to bear. Strong enough, it seems, to last a lifetime—until, decades later, as the girls become women, Sula’s anarchy leads to a betrayal that may be beyond forgiveness.

This is an excellent convuluted story, It rambles, it twists and turns. Lyrical and poetic, excellent well developed characters. I read this novel and I saw myself, my blackness, my anger, my college experiences and I saw my survival. Thank you Toni Morrison. You were an excellent writer and FABULOUS story teller. The story line was drawn out, but it’s something about Toni Morrison’s style of writing that intrigues me. I can’t quite put a finger on it, but it is very intriguing and has me turning the page for more.

As a person who does not like to read often. This probably isn’t a good book to start at. It was a bit of a challenge to understand her writing style but once you get in the grove its alright. I found myself going back and rereading to make sure I wasn’t missing anything due to the quick jumps she does between paragraphs!

Good book with a deeper meaning about life, that becomes evident as the book goes along. Life may be difficult, and the journey may not always be what we expect. The friendships we make leave a lasting impression, and those we love will remain in our hearts regardless of what other feel.
