Description

On the cusp of their epic battle with Shinzon, many of Captain Jean-Luc Picard's long-time crew were heading for new assignments and new challenges. Among the changes were William Riker's promotion to captain and his new command, Riker's marriage to Counselor Deanna Troi, and Dr. Beverly Crusher's new career at Starfleet Medical. But the story of what set them on a path away from the Starship Enterprise™ has never been told.
UNTIL NOW.

The site of one of the Dominion War's fiercest battles, the Rashanar Sector now contains a vast interstellar graveyard littered with the lifeless hulks of hundreds of devastated starships. The explosive destruction of so many varied warp drives has severely distorted the space-time continuum in this region, resulting in dangerous unleashed energies and bizarre gravitational anomalies.

The Enterprise has been assigned to patrol the perimeter of the danger zone, while other vessels carry out the difficult and highly hazardous task of retrieving the bodies of the dead from the wrecked warships.

To some alien races, the former battleground is hallowed space. To others, including the rapacious Androssi, it is a scavenger's paradise, ripe for salvage. None expect this ship's graveyard to hold a deadly secret that will force the android Data to make a heart-wrenching decision about the path his life will take -- and that will endanger not only the Enterprise, but Picard's future in Starfleet.

The beginning section (and all the sections that feature Wes) are great. But the other sections seem sub-par. I would say that the author is very skilled in sewing together plot elements, but not so much when it comes to character dialogue and actions. The dialogue should match the character's speaking style from the show, but in this book, dialogue coming from Picard and Data is hit-or-miss. He seems to really nail Crusher, Riker, and Geordi though.

lately i've begun to notice a trend with john vornholt's books ... while they're set in the TNG universe, the characters he writes are NOT the same characters we're accustomed to with the series nor does he have a very fluid writing style. with most books, characterizations are the imagination of the author as the characters are, for the most part, the creation of the author; however, since the TNG books are based off of the characters that we've come to know and love from the television series and the movies, they should mirror them in the way the characters act/speak/react ... john vornholt just isn't capable of doing that ... his characters are pale representations of themselves and they act nothing like their on-screen counterparts and i find myself scoffing at conversations between characters and thinking "that's NOT how [insert character here] would respond or act!" conversations among the crew seem forced and don't feel--for lack of a better word--real. picard feels so much less of a strong figure and more like a petulant child in this book, and troi, while somewhat of an annoying character in the TV series, is over-the-top with childish outbursts and rationalizations that make me cringe (these are just two examples). overall i am a HUGE TNG fan and i WILL read these novels as they fall into the timeline, but i fervently wish that john vornholt would find another line of work as his stories are becoming increasingly unbearable to read.

I haven't read a book oh I guess about 3 hrs. But I saw this on a shelt at a book sale and got it for some reason. I have always been a star trekker . But I read the book in a little over a day. I had to find time to read it and enjoy reading and took me in to it. Wi was in the book thriving on the content of the book. I stayed in till I finished with the awful realization, these books are old. It's been out for quite awhile. Gotta get more.
