Description

Springtime in Styria. And that means war.

There have been nineteen years of blood. The ruthless Grand Duke Orso is locked in a vicious struggle with the squabbling League of Eight, and between them they have bled the land white. While armies march, heads roll and cities burn, and behind the scenes bankers, priests and older, darker powers play a deadly game to choose who will be king.

War may be hell but for Monza Murcatto, the Snake of Talins, the most feared and famous mercenary in Duke Orso's employ, it's a damn good way of making money too. Her victories have made her popular -- a shade too popular for her employer's taste. Betrayed, thrown down a mountain and left for dead, Murcatto's reward is a broken body and a burning hunger for vengeance. Whatever the cost, seven men must die.

Her allies include Styria's least reliable drunkard, Styria's most treacherous poisoner, a mass-murderer obsessed with numbers and a Northman who just wants to do the right thing. Her enemies number the better half of the nation. And that's all before the most dangerous man in the world is dispatched to hunt her down and finish the job Duke Orso started. . .

Characters. Characters is where this story shines in the grimmest way possible. The politics and world leave more to be desired but small problems in the overarching story.
  • Great work of fiction!

Loved the names of the characters! I hate when authors overthink and come up with complicated names that are hard to pronounce. Joe also has this ability to describe incredible detailed scenes with half the amount of words as other authors. Also this book has rereadability with all the clever quotes and overall interesting things that are said throughout the story.

Though some reviews implied that this book was a step down from the First Law Trilogy, I enjoyed those books so much I gave it a shot. I wasn't disappointed. This is a great book, and probably every bit as good of a read as the First Law trilogy was. Just read it. Note, this book should be read after reading First Law, but before The Heroes. Certain events and characters just make more sense when you read the books in order.

The book is a good read and you don't need to be familiar to the authors The Fist Law series to enjoy it. The characters are splendidly realized but the book becomes a little too predictable at the end. The twists and turns are good but in the end you'll be reading this book out of pure entertainment and not to find out how the plot ends. In the end I recommend this book to anybody who's into fantasy and can accept a little gritty on the side because you'll like at the end.

It's well-written dark fantasy revolving around revenge and shows how destructive the protagonist's quest for revenge is (both psychologically and physically, along with a high body count). It's quite grim, but the characters were colorful and interesting.
