Description

`I found this a fascinating book to read, I could identify with my time at school when I would often write with my paper almost in at right angles to my body because I found this comfortable, and the teacher's insistence that the paper be straight in front of me. This then made me twist my body into a ridiculous shape, and would sometimes result in punishment for not sitting on the chair correctly....if only the teacher had understood the same principles as Rosemary Sassoon, who in this book emphasizes flexibility and clear thinking about essential issues, rather than to impose solutions' - Spare-Chair `Handwriting: The Way to Teach It should be required reading wherever Primary school teachers are trained, then perhaps there would be fewer young people still struggling to communicate in legible writing in Secondary school and later life' - Handwriting Today `This is a comprehensive textbook, and an extremely accessible and practical guide which should be on the bookshelf of every practitioner. I recommend it highly' - Jeni Riley, Head of Early Childhood and Primary Education, Institute of Education, University of London This book is an essential classroom guide to the teaching of handwriting. It covers all aspects of the subject: from whole-school planning, to classroom management and the teaching of letters in a highly illustrated and practical sequence; and from initial letter forms through to joined writing. The author presents many examples and imaginative ideas to make learning to write more effective and interesting for children and for teachers. This Second Edition includes material on problems which children can have with handwriting, and how to diagnose and remedy them. The author offers strategies for better teaching, and her aim throughout the book is to encourage flexibility and clear thinking about essential issues, rather than to impose solutions. This innovative new book aims to help teachers and SENCOs to work alongside pupils to help them address their own difficulties. The book has three parts: Part one explores the various issues which underpin any discussion of handwriting: letterforms; the pros and cons of handwriting models; how to help children write at speed; writing posture; pens and pen hold; left-handedness; talking to parents; and some of the common causes of handwriting problems. Part two presents a series of examples of handwriting in photocopiable form, aimed principally at the pupils but with full teacher support, designed to show pupils a range of handwriting problems, helping them them to self-diagnose and work towards improvement. Each page offers practical tips and help for pupils with difficulties. All of the photocopiable material is also provided in electronic format on the companion website. Part three sets out a diagnostic technique for teachers to follow, outlining three approaches to tackling handwriting problems: a quick, small-group assessment; providing one-to-one help; and working with a whole class. Each approach is outlined in detail, offering advice on effective observation, procedures to follow in giving appropriate practical help to pupils, and how to assess progress. Part three also offers guidelines for designing checklists, and the role of surveys and research. Authoritative, wide-ranging and full of practical help, this book will be particularly useful for secondary teachers, secondary SENCOs and teaching support staff. To view the video - click here-----------------------------------------------------------`This is a very honest book and should be essential reading for anyone beginning training as a counsellor. It will also be useful for experienced therapists to stimulate reflections on their own practice... to examine their work and to learn from errors. It is refreshing to witness the honesty and openness of the writers - especially so in the present culture, where many therapists set themselves up as flawless experts... I would recommend this book... it provides an informed and open discussion on the problems encountered by therapists' - Clinical Psychology Forum Counsellors often struggle in their work with clients, convinced that their more experienced colleagues have not encountered similar problems and worries. In this volume, some of Britain's leading counsellors give the lie to this myth. Writing openly and frankly, they share the painful lessons they have learned over the course of their careers as practitioners. The contributors' combined experience proves that all counsellors, no matter how expert or well-known, have made mistakes, or faced challenges, and from them have had to learn aspects about the process of counselling - the hard way. The five `lessons' from each contributor are placed in the context of the counsellor's own particular circumstances, and a concluding section in each chapter links the connecting themes that emerged throughout their learning process. It is the sort of publication we need in the profession and it is well worth being part of every head teacher or staff development tutor's collection of really useful books. I have to confess, even before I had finished reading it for review I was using Helping Teachers Develop with my trainee teachers' - Peter Stammers, in the Journal of In-service Education `The book explores ways teachers at all levels can mentor others and improve their careers. [It] also contains guidance on ways to cope with having your lessons observed and how to make constructive comments as an observer' - Michael Shaw, Times Educational Supplement `This is another excellent and accessible practice guide from someone who, unusually, understands both the classroom teacher from long years of practice and the theory. The chapter on observation of teachers should be read by every headteacher, deputy and teacher who engages in monitoring classroom practice. Note, a few inspectors would benefit too! It's one to read and then refer to on a regular basis if you work in schools or PGCE departments' - Tim Brighouse, Chief Adviser for London Schools Helping teachers develop - whether they're trainees, newly or recently qualified, in their first three, ten or twenty years, and whether they're superb or struggling - is vital for the profession, for the millions of children who'll learn more as a result.Schools have to take greater responsibility for staff's continuing professional development (CPD) but there is little real help for the people who develop teachers. The best teachers will be expected to mentor trainee and newly qualified teachers (NQTs) and share good practice with all colleagues.Drawing directly on real-life experience and the latest research, this book will help people in a mentoring, coaching, advisory or management role to:o develop teachers, through understanding adult learning and the CPD cycleo meet needs from the range of professional development activitieso carry out observations and give oral and written feedback in a range of situationso help and monitor planning and other parts of the jobo help teachers develop their careers.Using examples from current practice, Sara will take you though every stage of CPD, from what professional development is to how you can support and monitor staff in your own school. There are photocopiable materials for you to use. The guidance in this book will be essential for mentors, induction tutors, CPD/staff development coordinators, people with advanced skills or excellent teacher status, and all those with a leadership and management role in schools or local authorities.Sara Bubb is the UK's leading induction expert and has vast expertise in the CPD field. She runs many courses for different levels of school staff, assesses trainee and advanced skills teachers and is the new teacher expert for the Times Educational Supplement. Based on John Heron's well-known six category model, the book presents different forms of helping behaviour which can be adopted by any practitioner working face-to-face with a client. Drawing on his many years of experience as a therapist, consultant and teacher, the author explores the contexts and issues associated with these different forms of helping and, for each, describes a wide range of practical interventions for the practitioner to use. He examines the objectives of helping, states of personhood, the many ways in which helping can degenerate, the preparation and training of the practitioner, and examples of how the interventions can be used by different occupational groups.Helping the Client is the Fifth Edition of the book originally entitled Six Category Intervention Analysis. Revised and enlarged throughout, with a new chapter on co-working, the book remains essential reading for the development of interpersonal skills, in counselling, management, health care, social work, youth and community work, education, and many other professions. Now that the initial controversy over brief therapy has begun to subside it is great to see how brief therapy works in practice. Gaie Houston's book is part of a series published by SAGE which sets out to do this - and hers is particularly illuminating and accessible. As she points out Gestalt is better equipped than many mainstream therapies to be applied to situations with extreme time constraints because it is both flexible and it acknowledges the part that can be played by other therapies. But what propels Houston's book out of the hum drum - or indeed the defensive (or offensive) diatribes about short therapy which have appeared over the past few years - is her vivid accounts of real-life sessions, both one to one and group, which punctuate the text' - Amazon Review Brief Gestalt Therapy demonstrates how the Gestalt approach can be used effectively in brief interventions with clients. Gestalt's distinctively integrative nature and emphasis on a highly co-operative working alliance, make it particularly suited to brief work. The book sets out the basic theory and principles of Gestalt and looks at each phase of the therapeutic process from initial assessment through the beginning and middle stages to the ending of the work. It presents clear, practical strategies for therapists to follow and in particular examines:} aspects of Gestalt which are especially relevant to brief work-} the elements of successful therapy -} ways of improving skills.Brief Gestalt Therapy includes vignettes and detailed case studies which bring the theory alive. It will contribute much to both existing literature on Gestalt therapy and also brief therapy, and will be invaluable to trainee and practising Gestalt therapists. What makes it different to many other similar books is that it shows teachers that speaking, listening and reading create the foundations for writing. Tested in schools, staff said: It is a very useful framework for action-research based upon secure theory. When deciding classroom strategies, it is easy to find what you are looking for and the chapter summaries are very helpful. Some of the staff development and training suggestions are very practical and we are trying them out. We found the emphasis upon class novels and the class discussion that follows, very important, especially when linked to the excellent examples of children's writing. This book may appear to some as theoretical and 'academic', but this is why it will be valuable. It does what the title says because it shows how children learn to write. It starts at the beginning and saves diving into the latest trend. Perhaps its best recommendation is that every school that was asked to look at it said, `It's good and we have ordered a copy' - John Lilly, independent education consultant `The chapter on the Taxonomy of Writing Purposes will be useful for planning and those on extending and enhancing writing will definitely be helpful in many day-to-day situations' - Nicholas Bielby, Times Educational Supplement This book outlines the processes which are involved when children learn to write. The author also emphasises the importance of the research process rather than the written product, which will appeal to all those children who dislike the written presentation of work! Each chapter outlines the learning outcomes, has a timed teaching content, and suggests a core activity; it also suggests differentiation and includes some simple 'games'.
