Three Stars Because She Tried

I was ready to toss in the towel by chapter 4. I read “Backhand” when it was a free download, and I needed to pass the time on a flight. So, I went through my collection of books I’ve read and enjoyed and thought I’d give one of her other books a shot.
The book did get better after chapter 3. There were some good parts. Then it got worse as the pages turned but I kept pushing on.
Ultimately, this finished with lots of sex, cheesy plot (seriously, the dropping of the fraternizing clause?? That doesn’t fly in professional sports), and a ridiculous proposal. It was a Hallmark Holiday made for tv type scenario.
My issue? The story jumps in with little character buildup and immediate stupidity when the two are near one another. She is a physical trainer with the professionalism of a lovesick high schooler. He isn’t much better.
From reading Backhand, I expected more substance with mature conversations.
