Description

Tobias Kaya doesn't care about The Savior. He doesn't care that She's the Ruler of the realm or that She purified the land, and he certainly doesn't care that She's of age to be married. But when competing for Her hand proves to be his last chance to save his family, he's forced to make The Savior his priority.

Now Tobias is thrown into the Sovereign's Tournament with nineteen other men, and each of them is fighting-and killing-for the chance to rule at The Savior's side. Instantly his world is plagued with violence, treachery, and manipulation, revealing the hidden ugliness of his proud realm. And when his circumstances seem especially dire, he stumbles into an unexpected romance, one that opens him up to unimaginable dangers and darkness.

Trigger warning: this novel contains graphic violence, adult language, and sexual situations.

This book delivers a thrilling blend of high action and romance, with mysteries aplenty perfect for enthusiasts of either genre. The characters are compelling, making it easy to become emotionally invested. Speaking as a fan Warhammer 40k and of Kull, Bran Mak Morn, Elric, and Conan it may not match the style of Dan Abnett and Robert E. Howard, the exceptional prose and rich world-building make it a standout similar to stories such as Hammer of Doom by Glenn Thater. It's so engaging that even my daughter enjoyed listening to it during our drives to school. I decided to delve into the book myself and was impressed enough to subscribe to the author's works. If you're into gripping narratives with strong characters and immersive worlds, this is definitely worth a listen. Overall, a solid 4/5 recommendation!

Don’t start this book if you don’t it to consume all your free time, because it WILL. Moreci perfectly balances the peaks and valleys of the book, the pacing is perfection, and her characters are all so 3-dimensional you’re immersed in the story just as much as them. Highly recommend! I really hope there’s some continuation in the book or another story placed in this well-crafted world.

Some spoilers!!!!!! So here’s the thing. I actually really enjoyed this book, so much so that I found myself flying through the chapters and only stopping when I absolutely had to. It is a really interesting plot and while some things were predictable it wasn’t enough to stop me from reading it. I really enjoyed the budding romance between Leila and Tobias and I thought it was well paced, all things considered. They were cute together and funny and everything you want in a romance so I have no qualms with that all all. I’ve seen a lot of people annoyed by the lack of world building but for me it didn’t matter. I felt you were given enough information on the world and you can use your imagination to fill in the blanks. I personally do not need to be described the entire backstory and the whole history and every single house and stone pathway of the world. It’s boring and tedious and I kind of hate when writers do that unnecessarily (or when they describe their characters ad nauseam.) I thought the writer did a great job of giving us just enough information about the world and the characters so that we can fill in the rest. I mean , honestly, can we not use our imaginations anymore? Isn’t that half the fun of reading? Here’s were things fell a little flat for me: SPOILERS AHEAD!!!!! Milo. I felt like he was killed way too early, I’d hardly had anytime to get attached to him and his death didn’t really make an impact on me. He died. Bummer, but so did two others just before him so, whatever. I think if it happened later in the book it would have made more impact but that’s just me. A lot of language, holy cow there is a lot so if you’re averse to that you’ve been warned. The swearing was so frequent that when the characters swore and it should have actually meant something it kind of fell flat and seemed a bit redundant. There’s only so many combinations of swearing. So for me that was a minor annoyance but again, not enough to stop me from reading. The ending. I’m hoping it ended this way because she is planning a sequel, as I’d really enjoy reading this book but I hadn’t expected it to end this way and it was kind of anticlimactic. After all the tension and worry that built of from the book the ending left me feeling deflated. It was a happy ending but...I don’t know, maybe it was just me. But again, perhaps she left it open for a sequel? All in all this is a good read that pulls you in, until your utterly absorbed and intrigued. It’s funny and entertaining and battle heavy and bloody and all the things I wanted to shake up the tedium that is countless hours of studying.
  • Good story/distracting language

I enjoyed the story and the characters but a good chunk of the book was just swearing for the sake of swearing. Also could’ve used a little less gore. Having said that I would definitely read more to find out what happens in the story and I think the next part will be more fun now that the story has been set up.
  • Exciting all the way to the end
