Although it has a slow beginning which may cause the reader to get bored. As soon as you begin to read chapter 15, you are immediately hooked. When I hit the hook point I finished the book in a single day.

I am reading this book with some 5th graders as a book assignment. When I was around their age I loved the book so much. I liked how Avi, the author of the book, added drama, a little bit of horror and much more.

“The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle”, written by Avi, is a book about a 13 year old girl called Charlotte who is put on a ship to sail across the Atlantic Ocean from her boarding school in England to the United States where her family lives. She doesn’t trust the crew and only stays close with the captain because he seems to be a real gentleman. Over time, Charlotte, a girl from a rich and sophisticated family, becomes a salty, courageous and hardworking sailor. But some strange and mysterious things happen that force Charlotte to switch sides and realize that Captain Jaggery was not quite the gentleman he wanted everyone to believe he was. After a violent storm, a sailor is found dead and Charlotte is accused of the murder. She desperately needs to prove her innocence. I recommend this book to teenagers or anyone who likes nautical fiction, adventures at sea, murder mystery and books taking place in the 19th century. This book, to my opinion, will be suitable for ages 12+ because younger readers might find murder scenes a bit disturbing. “A sailor chooses the wind that takes the ship a port. Ah, yes, but once you’re abroad, as you have seen, winds have a mind of their own.” Avi
