Yellowstone National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. In 1872 it became the first national park in the world, to preserve its geysers, hot springs, and thermal areas, and to offer protection to the park’s wildlife and environment. The park covers 3,475 square miles (8,995 sq. km), with most in the northwestern part of Wyoming. Smaller parts of the park are located in Idaho and Montana.
