This series of the MeisterSchreiber David Weber has matured in depth of concept and character to the point where this latest volune ,SWORD of the SOUTH, leaves me immeasurably enriched. Yet I am hungry for the victory to come. Live, Gnädiger Herr Weber, to finish this tale. I, your humble fan, do beseech you.
  • Decent

Somehow, Weber's fantasy is never as good as his sci-if. Formulaic with a few surprises and not a bad shift from go-to Marty Stu character Bahzell. In a series where powerful gods intervene directly and regularly, the "good" gods always seem to give more/better goodies and "good" has the best/most uber wizards...this has less of that nonsense but it's still there. Standard fare, decent read.
  • Not your typical kitchen-sink fantasy

Not a kitchen-sink fantasy. A reasonable outing in his world. He actually did some neat things, with a decent time skip from his previous works. The main character is not his previous characters, and fits much more into the destined by fate type of hero. Technically speaking, it’s got some good points, but does not appreciably advance the state of the art. If you didn't or don't like his other works this is not going to win you over. Still, it’s a decent work of fantasy.
