Kiss Me in Christmas

I was unsure about Chloe after meeting her in Snowbound at Christmas and to be honest, seeing just how Debbie Mason would bring her to a point that I actually could care about her for an entire book. An actress and a world-class multi-award winning drama queen, Chloe isn’t mean-spirited or spiteful toward others, she just doesn’t see them in her world. As a child, she was more awkward and shy, and while she hasn’t lost any of those insecurities, she buries them all behind a face of bravado and seeming diva-like actions that serve as her security blanket. Former star quarterback and BMOC Easton exchanged his life in Christmas for one in the military, but returned after an injury and has fallen back into the quiet and settled life he dreamed of as a child. Now, he remembers the quiet, kind and shy Chloe from high school, someone he always found intriguing. But now, spoilt, dramatic and high maintenance Chloe is so vastly different (and not in a good way) from the memories he has of her that steering clear is the best option. Mason used growth and a clear insight into Chloe, showing clearly just how insecure she really is, and how badly (although often good intentioned) her plans to make a move for Easton really are. Fortunately, Easton does not play into her diva act, and he does help her to find her inner self- the person she really is without the lights, camera, action. A bit of a back and forth for me: I felt more frustrated for Easton than he did for himself, seriously a passing pony cart would have been a solid option to run over Chloe in more than one instance. But, slowly but surely Mason brought me around, and while I never could say that I completely loved her, she did grow on me, keeping me intrigued throughout the story. What emerges is one who desperately needs to be loved and supported finally finds that support and security, allowing her to banish those childish feelings of not being enough. A wonderful story that shows the power of love and discovering who you really are can make all the difference.
