Wilhelmina “Billie” Bennet is a very beautiful, young, red-haired woman, engaged to a man whose mother doesn’t want her son to marry. She is traveling on the R.M.S. Atlantic, which goes from New York to Southampton. On the boat, there are three other men: Bream Mortimer, Billie’s admirer and long-time friend, Eustace Hignett, Billie’s fiancé, and Sam Marlow, Eustace’ cousin. As soon as he sees Billie, Sam falls in love with her, and starts following her around. Soon, he learns that Bream is also in love with Billie.
Later, the setting of the story moves to a country house in Hampshire, where a lot of events will happen.
What will happen in the country house? Will Billie get married to Eustace, or she will choose another man? Will she get married to some of them?
