Description

Newbery Honoree Ann Martin once again proves her versatility with an incredible stylistic departure in this "autobiography" of a stray dog.

Squirrel and her brother Bone begin their lives in a toolshed behind someone's summer house. Their mother nurtures them and teaches them the many skills they will need to survive as stray dogs. But when their mother is taken from them suddenly and too soon, the puppies are forced to make their own way in the world, facing humans both gentle and brutal, busy highways, other animals, and the changing seasons. When Bone and Squirrel become separated, Squirrel must fend for herself, and in the process makes two friends who in very different ways define her fate.

I read extensively; everything from history, biographies, and action to things like Ann’s β€œA Dog’s Life”. I’ve read several books written from an animal’s point of view and Ann Martin has done a wonderful job of creating a interesting and touching story with this book. Congratulations to her. Good quality authorship is very difficult and creative. Well done. Steve Segal

I got this book at my school library. There was only a few days left of library and didn’t get to finish it. I went to the public library and couldn’t find it. Finally I found it! By the way, I love all of Martin’s books! I love dog books, so her books are perfect for me. I just can’t explain how amazing this book truly is. Thanks. Yours Truly, Megan

Tips book was so good and very very detailed. I felt that I was Squirrel, and that I met Matthias, George and Marcy, the Beckers, and Susan. Good Job Ann M. Martin for writing an exquisite and detailed and in depth book about a dog's life.
