For the last twenty years of his life, Edward Payson (1783-1827) was the much beloved pastor of Second Church in Portland, Maine. This collection of what he saw, thought, and felt during the last month of his life—as he experienced the most severe physical suffering—are those of a humble saint at the very gates of heaven. In a letter to his sister he wrote, "The celestial city is full in my view. Its glories beam upon me, its sounds strike upon my ears, and its spirit is breathed into my heart." While not every saint may experience such ecstasy in their dying hour, his testimony demonstrates that the Lord Jesus gives victory to His people—even in death.
