Description

Edgar Award-winning and New York Times bestselling author C.J. Box delivers a thriller in Back of Beyond about a troubled cop trying to save his son from a killer in Yellowstone, now reissued with additional bonus content including an introduction from the author.

Cody Hoyt, although a brilliant cop, is an alcoholic struggling with two months of sobriety when his friend Hank Winters is found burned to death in a remote mountain cabin. At first it looks like the suicide of a man who’s fallen off the wagon, but Cody knows Hank better than that. As Cody digs deeper into the case, all roads lead to foul play. After years of bad behavior with his department, Cody is in no position to be investigating a homicide, but he will stop at nothing to find Hank’s killer.

When clues found at the scene link the murderer to an outfitter leading tourists on a multiday wilderness horseback trip into the remote corners of Yellowstone National Park—a pack trip that includes his son Justin—Cody is desperate to get on their trail and stop the killer before the group heads into the wild. In a fatal cat-and-mouse game, where it becomes apparent the murderer is somehow aware of Cody’s every move, Cody treks into the wilderness to stop a killer hell-bent on destroying the only important thing left in his life.

*BONUS CONTENT: This edition of Back of Beyond includes a new introduction from the author and a discussion guide

I liked the characters. Cody is a bomb waiting to go off but he just keeps under control enough to be effective but not get in trouble
  • Great read.

I loved Mr. Box’s Joe Pickett series, and was looking forward to more clever story telling, but “Back of Beyond” reads like a totally different author wrote this book. It’s wordy, the dialogue is sophomoric, the plot develops in a very unrealistic way. If you want a good story, concise editing, believable characters, then read the Joe Pickett series. If you want a bloated, B-movie style book with gratuitous violence, goofy characters, plus wolves and grizzlies behaving strangely (never allowed in the Joe Pickett books) then this book is for you.

My first book read from C J Box, this book was absolutely amazing and I was intrigued throughout the whole story. Now I’m starting the Joe Pickett series. Box is an amazing author and I’m glad I found his books.

Absolutely loved this story! The story started out slow. I was indecisive at first. I am so glad that I kept reading. Because it was C. J. Box as the author—won me over—to keep reading. I am so glad I did. Cody Hoyt kept the intrigue—suspense on edge! Rogue cop—Sometimes, one has to NOT play by the rules! If you find you are unsure, like I did, keep reading. You will be so glad you did. 🐰🐰🐰🐰🐰

This is the first book I’ve read by this author and I’m glad I did. The detailed writing enabled you to visualize the surroundings putting you right there with the characters. The characters were well written and believable. This book was suspenseful and well paced. If you’re thinking about buying this book, in my opinion, Do It! I don’t think you will regret it!
