Description

When two young rival journalists find love through a magical connection, they must face the depths of hell, in a war among gods, to seal their fate forever.

After centuries of sleep, the gods are warring again. But eighteen-year-old Iris Winnow just wants to hold her family together. Her mother is suffering from addiction and her brother is missing from the front lines. Her best bet is to win the columnist promotion at the Oath Gazette.

To combat her worries, Iris writes letters to her brother and slips them beneath her wardrobe door, where they vanish—into the hands of Roman Kitt, her cold and handsome rival at the paper. When he anonymously writes Iris back, the two of them forge a connection that will follow Iris all the way to the front lines of battle: for her brother, the fate of mankind, and love.

Shadow and Bone meets Lore in Rebecca Ross's Divine Rivals, an epic enemies-to-lovers fantasy novel filled with hope and heartbreak, and the unparalleled power of love.

Writing style is beautiful. Word choice, beautiful. Main characters, love them. Ending, wild.

First off, Rebecca Ross is an amazing writer. Wow. Also, I felt like she did an incredible job making this story unique. As mentioned below, the first 30ish pages were a little hard to get through but then I was hooked. I adore the love between Roman and Iris. Usually I am more of a slow-burn romance fan but I felt like the pace of their romance was understandable considering the war happening around them! Highly recommend.

I’m so glad I stuck through the first 50 pages, because at that time, I didn’t find the book interesting. Now, in my attempt to pen down a review, I find myself grappling with the inadequacy of words to capture the sheer beauty woven by this author. Her descriptions transcend language, evoking emotions for things and experiences I struggle to articulate. Reading her work is not just a journey through pages; it's a masterclass in the art of storytelling. Each word is a gem, each moment a delicacy. This isn't just a book; it's an invitation to explore the nuances of language and life itself. A must-read and a 6 stars read for me.

After reading a series with my friend in tandem. She asked about us reading this one saying that she was loving it so far. It was a bit slow in the beginning, but after a moment of getting to know Iris and Kitt and their banter. I fell in love. Their relationship goes through so much in such a short time, it has you on the edge of your seat as the book goes. You never knew what was going to happen. I was anticipating of what was going to happen next as I turned the page. So excited to dive into the next book. AMAZING.

When I first was deciding if I should read this book, I saw a review that said it was OK, and that the fantasy part was unnecessary. I saw another review that said, don’t listen to the bad reviews it’s worth it. This book was so good. Both the main character and her love interest have lovable and amazing personalities. It’s been a long time since I’ve read a book that has love interests without unnecessary drama and annoying toxic behavior. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves romantic fantasy and maybe even a little historically inspired. In my opinion, the fantasy makes the book, mysterious and intriguing and leaves you excited and looking forward to understanding the lore for when the second book comes out. I have absolutely no complaints and think this book was great. Highly recommend it was a wonderful read I was enthralled!

Based purely on writing style, Rebecca Ross gets an absolute 5/5. Her writing style is poignant, striking, and literally breathtaking at times. There were moments that I had to reread time and time again where I felt my chest swell with the beauty of the words (cheesy, but true!). However, plot-wise, I would give this book a 3/5. It is a cute romance story that straddles the line between young adult romance and adventure, but I found the fantasy themes to be necessary for only one aspect: the letters. Otherwise, this book could’ve been entirely without fantasy theme and likely had the same effect. For that reason, the world-building felt flat and lifeless to me, and I couldn’t quite picture it in my head. Overall, I still enjoyed this book and will read some of Ross’ other works - she is a beautiful writer.

I can confidently say that this book is one of the best books I’ve read all year, if you are an enemies to lovers fan then you will absolutely love this. The writing is absolutely gorgeous and how the characters develop and talk to each other is so unique and beautiful, the plot kept me on my toes and I truthfully loved this book so I think you should also go and read it.

The insta love in this book was god awful and the FMC was borderline insufferable. I usually finish series on principle but i have no desire to continue this story.

This book was ok. Not a fan of the writing. It didn’t start to get interesting until the last few chapters. The ending makes me want to find out what happens in the next book but not sure if I want to read it.
