Description

The Old Man and the Sea was awarded the Pulitzer Prize for Fiction in 1953, and the year after, the Nobel Prize in Literature was awarded to Ernest Hemingway in 1954. It was the last major work of fiction written by Hemingway that was published during his lifetime. One of his most famous works, this short novel is already a modern classic. It is the superbly told, tragic story of Santiago, an aging Cuban fisherman in the Gulf Stream and his struggles with a giant Marlin far out in the Gulf Stream off the coast of Cuba.

A heartbreaking story of an old man wrestling with his youthful, inner-self. Every night, Santiago dreams of lions - the proud, untamed beasts of his home. Everyday, he tries to recapture that version of himself; he who sees himself as a lion. This leads him to near ruin while trying to prove his manhood by besting a massive fish. Despite his success, the ocean robs him of his accomplishment, because he have the physicality of his youth. To know this fate awaits me someday is not comforting, but the novella is wonderfully written.

How wonderful the story telling and the description in this novel is! How amazing this old man was to overcome all the challenges when facing the sea alone! This character is a human, a creature with the potential to be undefeated ever.
