Description

A Goodreads Top 20 Book of the Last 5 Years
Don’t miss the #1 New York Times bestselling blockbuster and Reese Witherspoon Book Club Pick that’s sold over 5 million copies—now streaming on Apple TV+ starring Jennifer Garner!

The “page-turning, exhilarating” (PopSugar) and “heartfelt thriller” (Real Simple) about a woman who thinks she’s found the love of her life—until he disappears.

Before Owen Michaels disappears, he smuggles a note to his beloved wife of one year: Protect her. Despite her confusion and fear, Hannah Hall knows exactly to whom the note refers—Owen’s sixteen-year-old daughter, Bailey. Bailey, who lost her mother tragically as a child. Bailey, who wants absolutely nothing to do with her new stepmother.

As Hannah’s increasingly desperate calls to Owen go unanswered, as the FBI arrests Owen’s boss, as a US marshal and federal agents arrive at her Sausalito home unannounced, Hannah quickly realizes her husband isn’t who he said he was. And that Bailey just may hold the key to figuring out Owen’s true identity—and why he really disappeared.

Hannah and Bailey set out to discover the truth. But as they start putting together the pieces of Owen’s past, they soon realize they’re also building a new future—one neither of them could have anticipated.

With its breakneck pacing, dizzying plot twists, and evocative family drama, The Last Thing He Told Me is a “page-turning, exhilarating, and unforgettable” (PopSugar) suspense novel.

  • Well written. Held me from beginning to end

Excellent storyline. Realistic without being hopeless. Suspenseful, well defined characters. Most enjoyable book I’ve read in a long time.
  • Loose ends

The beginning and middle captured me and she is a great writer, but the story itself started dying, and the ending fell flat. There were many loose ends to the story that I would have preferred the author to wrap up or explain.

Not gonna lie, I’m still new to reading, so if this review isn’t super polished, that’s why. But I really loved this book—it grabbed me from the first page and I basically read the whole thing in one day. It’s a quick read, but emotionally powerful. The story centers around Hannah, the main character, and right away I felt a connection. Her mom walked out of her life, her dad passed away, and her grandpa raised her. That hit close to home because my own dad wasn’t really there when it mattered—he chose another woman, struggled with drinking, and wasn’t the father I needed. But my stepdad stepped up in every way, and sadly, he passed not too long ago. So seeing Hannah really try in this story made me think a lot about my own experiences with my stepdad trying. The story gets even more intense when her father goes missing. I thought the author did a great job building suspense. One thing that bugged me a bit was the flashbacks—they felt kind of randomly placed and sometimes pulled me out of the moment. But overall, they still added depth to the Owen and Hannahs story. I really loved the way the relationship between Hannah and her step daughter Bailey grew throughout the book. They’re thrown together trying to find her dad, and in the process, they start to really understand and care about each other. That part really hit me, because I started seeing my stepdad as my dad right before I lost him. Also, shoutout to the kinda sub setting—Austin, TX. I hardly ever see books set there, so that was a cool surprise. By the end, I appreciated how the author tied everything together—especially Hannah’s realization about what’s best for Bailey despite outside pressure (I hated Grady😒). In short, this book hit emotionally and kept me turning pages. If you’ve ever had complicated family stuff or know what it’s like to lose someone who meant the world to you, I think this book will hit you too.

I had trouble making the connections that finally solved the mystery…the whole Austin tie in seemed weak. But I enjoyed how stepmother and stepdaughter reconciled their differences to solve this twisty story. (stepmom showed greater patience than I would). I enjoy all of Reese’s pick.

After seeing that this book was turned into a show for Apple TV, I got interested because I haven’t seen the book they adapted yet that wasn’t fascinating. This was my first book I’ve read by Laura Dave, but I’m pretty sure it won’t be my last. It was an excellent read, and I feel all the loose ends were tied up nicely. It’s definitely one that puts you through an emotional wringer as the reader, but it was a journey I enjoyed taking. Highly recommended.
  • Good potential, bland ending

This book had so much potential with the story and how much suspense they had built just for the ending to give no satisfaction whatsoever Just completely cut off at the peak of the suspense So many questions unanswered
  • Not enough suspense
