It’s such a compelling story—packed full of details about the history of psychiatry’s journey to understand and treat this devastating illness—entwined with the personal and many heart wrenching memories/experiences of most of the members of this huge family—the author did a tremendous job compiling all the research and family stories into a fabulous read. All the Galvan’s that participated in the writing of their family should be commended for their bravery and honesty. I encourage anyone who has a schizophrenic family member to read this. Anyone who would normally reject this nonfiction book as potentially unreadable—don’t! It’s a wonderful book. I absolutely loved it.

This is not only a great story, but an amazing look at how schizophrenia has been perceived, studied and treated over the years. It has certainly added to my empathy for all those who suffer with mental illness. Thank you for this book.

Excellent read. At times. I couldn’t put it down. Thank you for addressing mental illness in a manner that prevents shame and embarrassment and for humanizing those who possess it.

This was an intense read. I learned so much historical as well as current info. on this debilitating disease. Hearing the stories of the unaffected children was heartbreaking at times. This disease affects the entire family. I hope more breakthroughs will come soon in order to alleviate the pain and suffering as well as lost lives of those affected as well as those who suffer along side them; mothers, fathers and siblings.

At some point, I couldn’t put this book down. I don’t know anyone with schizophrenia or much about the disease. But, the deep dive into the family dynamic was fascinating especially because it included sexual abuse in that family.

My favorite uncle was diagnosed with schizophrenia which prompted a lifelong interest in the topic. This book was amazing much like the family it depicts. I’m so grateful for the researchers and to the author who made this book so readable.
