Description

Bestselling author Valerie Bowman sets the stage in Regency England for her Playful Brides series, where couples' misadventures on the way to the altar are witty, romantic romps based on some of the world's most beloved plays. The seventh book in the series, Never Trust a Pirate, is inspired by Emma Orczy's The Scarlet Pimpernel.

The rules of engagement were never so scandalous. . .

A rumored pirate and the scurrilous black sheep of his well-to- do family, Cade Cavendish relishes his world of rebellion, deception, and seduction. Nothing and no one can hold him to be the duty-bound, honorable man he is expected to be. But when an unexpected run-in at his twin brother’s estate with a ravishing, raven-haired maid leads her to believe he’s actually a viscount, Cade’s renegade life is thrown wildly off-kilter. And even though a case of mistaken identity can be quickly set to rights, matters of the heart are quite different…

Miss Danielle LaCrosse is startled to learn that the handsome gentleman who radiates sin and has the devil in his eyes is not her employer the Viscount, but rather his infamous brother. A former heiress, orphaned and left penniless, Danielle has more than a few secrets of her own. Cade may be skilled at coaxing even the most hidden desires out of Danielle but can he earn her trust—and win her heart—as they embark on an adventure to confront a dangerous enemy from both of their pasts . . . and uncover the identity of the so-called Black Fox along the way?

This has been one of the best pirate books I've read so far. I had a hard time putting this down at night. It has plenty of chapters but I just want more. Loved the way the characters were written to where you feel for them and their well being. This book has everything a pirate book needs; Secrets, spies, pirates, suspense, twists, and of course love. Never Trust a Pirate is book 7 in the series but can definitly be read as a stand alone.

I received an advanced copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. Cade and Danielle were a great hero and heroine pairing. There were some scenes that stand out to me (I don't like to give spoilers in my reviews) in this story. I liked how they challenged each other. Danielle was an unconventional heroine and was very likable. I felt that the story moved along at a good pace. Valerie Bowman's writing is engaging and easy to read.

Captivating! Filled with Passion, Adventure, Secrets, Intrigue & Danger. Fantastic read that had me captivated till the last page. Valerie Bowman takes the reader on a journey, filled with secrets, spies, pirates, murder, revenge, and romance. This was an exciting and thrilling adventure and I loved every tantalizing minute of it, especially the twists and turns that added so much intrigue, danger and passionate romance to this historical romance. Beautifully written, the author’s skill at setting up the plot is mesmerizing as it draws the reader into this story where no one is whom they seem, and secrets are everywhere. But this fast paced story also has unique and lovable characters, as well as some sassy, fun, sparing, scandalous banter and sizzling chemistry between Danielle LaCrosse and Cade Cavendish that will set your heart on fire. These two have met their match, and they just can’t stop thinking about the other and neither will you. When you combine romance with a unique and totally different storyline, stunningly, fantastic descriptions and characters that completely captivate you, you have a must read book. I loved it! Highly Recommended! I would like to thank the publisher of St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for allowing me the privilege to read this book before publication and I have voluntarily wrote an honest review.

First let me say I love Valorie's books. I have read them all. That said let me tell you a little about the book. This is the 7th of the Playful Brides. It goes back a few in the series to continue the story of the cavendish's. The book has twists and turns you don't expect with a nice love story mixed in. Valorie has made strong female characters that I find very refreshing. I've enjoyed all the books in the series. They are fun and entertaining. You can read this book alone, but you would miss out on a great series if you don't go back and read them all

What a great read!!! I loved this book! It's got hot twins, spies, secrets, love, intrigue, pirates, revenge, & shocking surprises!! (I was shocked & surprised on more than 1 occasion!) 'Never Trust A Pirate' is part of the Playful Brides series but it can be read as a standalone book! I love how this book was a little mix of genres-It's got a bit of romance, mystery, humor, & even a little horror! And while reading this book, my emotions were all over the place-sad one minute, laughing at the witty remarks the next, sighing at the romantic points & getting angry at the injustice of some parts! Talk about an emotional roller coaster! It seems like all the characters had a ton of secrets & good reasons for doing whatever they were doing-justice, revenge, love...! I'd love to read about the character, General Grimaldi, next!! He seems like a fascinating man-fictional though he may be!! All in all, I thoroughly enjoyed this book & definitely recommend it too any romance book lovers, especially historical romance lovers! *I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review!*
  • A Joy To Read

Valerie Brown’s newest novel “Never Trust A Pirate” was a fun, fast-pace novel that was a joy to read.

I typically don’t do the pirate novels. There’s usually something about them that just doesn’t mesh with my personal style, but this one was like multiple books in one. There was classic English settings. Some spy adventures thrown in. And then a climax on the high seas (no pun intended lol).

It wasn’t an overly complex story, but I didn’t mind that. It was entertaining to get lost in the world that Valerie created every time I picked the book up. (And I only put it down because, as a grown up, I’m required to adult every now and then lol). It was easy to picture the story as I read it - very vibrant and full. I loved Danielle & Cade. Something about bringing the bad boy to heel - it always feels satisfying to read lol.

All in all, it was a great story that I’m glad I got to read. I had a happy feeling when I finished it, and was a little bummed it was over. It’s definitely one I could read again on a rainy night and I look forward to reading another story by Valerie Brown in the near future!

I have read all the previous books in the Playful Brides series and was looking forward to reading Rafe's story. It was going to be about pirates and spies; a great combination. The beginning of the book was well written and kept me reading, but that changed rather quickly. It took me until almost halfway through the book to get deeply involved with the characters and plot; at times it seemed a little confusing. Maybe I had set my hopes too high waiting for the release, or read too many books this month (40) to really enjoy this one. With that in mind, I reread the book a second time and had the same reaction. I WANTED to like this book, unfortunately I did not. I will continue to read Valerie Bowman's books as they come out; every writer can have an off book. Her books and characters are well written and memorable for me, until this story.
