Description

Shadowvale isn’t typical small town America. The sun never shines, the gates decide who enters, magic abounds, and every resident bears some kind of curse.

No one knows this as well as raven shifter Deacon Evermore, who, like everyone in his family, has a curse. While his position as Shadowvale’s peacekeeper lets him use that curse for good, he’d rather live anywhere else. He stays for his family, but doubts he can last much longer.

Fledgling witch Emeranth Greer is determined to escape her past and make a fresh start in Shadowvale with the aunt she’s never met. Her aunt and the town prove to be far better than she imagined. There’s no way Em is leaving this magical place. Especially when staying means more time with the handsome Deacon.

But when Em’s troubled past catches up with her and nearly destroys the romance budding between her and Deacon, her instinct is to run again. Except there’s magic in the mix now and the town won’t let her leave. Only Deacon can save her, but can a cursed man clear her name…or will her history destroy them both?

Emerath, one of the main characters, is quite peculiar, and her whole understanding of who she is unveiled as the book progressed. I would have loved more interesting action and twists to the people who were cursed.

I fell in love with each character. Knowing the typical storyteller always has something absolutely heartbreakingly horrendous lurking in the next page I was wary. With a grateful sigh of relieve and appreciation I found myself smiling through happy tears as I finished this book. My emotionally health desperately needed to feel hope and live through a story where good is allowed to exist. Thank you thank you thank you to this author

kept my sttention and the ideas were unique. most stories rely on the ideas of others. nice to be entertained with new twists and women with brains instead of just hormones and delusional ideas about their talents.

One of the things I love most about Kristen Painter’s stories is how the towns are as much characters of the book, as the people who inhabit them. Shadowvale is such a charming and fascinating world to explore! This series opener is a sweet, budding romance that introduces us to Shadowvale, it’s history and purpose, as well as some of the key inhabitants. It's also a story about families and the bonds that hold them together. I found it to be the perfect read to brighten a dreary, overcast day!
  • Okay, but not much romance

This is listed under romance, and I guess it technically is since the two main characters fall in love; however, there wasn’t any more than occasional kissing. This would be fine if the story had any kind of excitement otherwise, but there really wasn’t. There was no climax, literally or figuratively, and this whole book could have been a novella, honestly. But it’s a good world-building effort, so here’s hoping book two is better.

And a wonderful first book it is. Shadowdale is a unique conception of a community of paranormals and when the protagonist of this book arrives there and learns about her true self her delightful story begins. I hope in subsequent books we readers get to find out who the tiger really is.
